Kigali: Asia’s largest carrier Singapore Airlines will start flights to Kigali following the conclusion of an Open Skies Agreements (OSAs) between Rwanda and Singapore, the company announced Monday.

An Open Skies Agreements is an arrangement which allows carriers the full flexibility to introduce services when market opportunities arise. This means that with this deal between the two countries, Singapore Airlines will start planning on how to enter into the regional market – which experts say is massively profitable.

The arrangement also means Singapore Airlines is also able to tap on traffic from and to third countries – such as Kenya, to improve the commercial viability of their operations, according to company.

Commenting about the new deal, Director-General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Mr Yap Ong Heng, welcomed the developments, saying: “Airlines operate in a challenging environment with dynamic markets.”

“It is thus critical for countries to proactively put in place air services frameworks that enable airlines the commercial freedom to respond to market opportunities,” said Heng in a statement.

The OSA with Rwanda is Singapore’s second with an African country, after the Singapore-Zambia OSA that was concluded in 2008.

In Africa, Singapore Airlines operates passenger services to Egypt and South Africa, while Singapore Airlines Cargo operates cargo services to Kenya and South Africa.

The global mega carrier did not say when exactly the Kigali flights will start. This announcement follows that on Air France/KLM which said last month that it will starting flying to Kigali in October.
