Ombudsman probes 18 corruption cases

GASABO – The office of Ombudsman is currently investigating eighteen cases of corruption, fraud and nepotism, Sunday Times has learnt.

A director in charge of anti-corruption and relative offences in the office of the Ombudsman, Yusuf Nsengiyumva, confirmed the development Wednesday.

In an exclusive interview with Sunday Times at his offices, Nsengiyumva said officials implicated will soon be brought before court.

“We are progressing well and government employees should know that there is no room in Rwanda for corrupt people,” Nsengiyumva said.

He declined to release the names of the culprits.
Cases under investigations involve breach of procurement laws and abuse of office by institutions’ heads. To date, two cases have been forwarded to police.

“We have registered quite a number of corruption cases since the year begun and we are still carrying out investigations before we decide whether to refer them to the Prosecutor General or police,” he said.

Among the cases under investigations is a case involving an executive secretary who is accused of soliciting money from people in exchange for national identity cards.
