Three days and $5,750 to go!!! We’re really down to the wire! Remember, if we don’t meet our goal by THIS SUNDAY NIGHT (6pm NYC time), we will lose all your pledges!
From Kigali, Assumpta and I are making great progress. We’ve been beating the drum about IRIBA both in Rwanda and outside, and lots of friends are joining us, with pledges of money of course, but with many other leads and offers to help.
This morning, we had a walk-through at the future home of IRIBA CENTER with some Rwandan and international guests, and then a small reception at the restaurant HEAVEN hosted by the French Ambassador, Laurent Contini. In attendance were several other Ambassadors (in particular from the European Union, Japan, etc.), the head of the French Cultural Center in Kigali, someone from the Kigali Mayor’s office, and representatives of civil society.
In the last few days, the reaction of Rwandans has been striking. As the whole society continues to grapple with the after-genocide and the reconstruction process, IRIBA Center seems to be filling a role as a mediation tool, that takes its place naturally as the continuation of the four films I made over the last decade. This reception is heart-warming and makes Assumpta and I very confident that IRIBA Center will thrive.

« I write in the hope that all of us who pledged are following up to see how the campaign is progressing, and that you will read my appeal. We have gone a long a way with our joint effort to support IRIBA Center, but we are not there yet and the deadline is now very near! Still the goal is within reach and we cannot just quite give up, right? For those of us who can, please let’s consider adding to the amount we initially offered: there are so many of us now, that 25 extra dollars from each of us would get us there… If we all could just go the extra step we can still make it happen! »

Depuis Kigali, Assumpta et moi sommes en train d’avancer à grands pas. Nous avons battu le rappel au Rwanda et ailleurs, et beaucoup de nos amis nous ont rejointes, en donnant bien sûr, mais aussi en offrant leur aide de différentes façons.
Ce matin, nous avons fait une visite du bâtiment qui abritera le Centre Iriba avec des invités rwandais et internationaux. Une petite réception organisée par l’Ambassadeur de France, Laurent Contini, a ensuite eu lieu en face, au restaurant Heaven, en présence d’autres Ambassadeurs (de l’Union Européenne, du Japon..etc), du directeur du Centre Culturel Français à Kigali, d’un membre du bureau du Maire de Kigali et de représentants de la société civile.
Ces derniers jours, nous avons été très touchées par la réaction des Rwandais. Alors que la société tout entière continue de se débattre avec le post-génocide et le processus de reconstruction, le Centre Iriba, qui est la continuation des quatre films que j’ai réalisés ces dix dernières années, semble trouver naturellement sa place. Cet accueil nous fait chaud au coeur à Assumpta et moi-même et nous confirme l’importance du rôle de médiation que le Centre Iriba peut avoir.
Ces dernières semaines, de nombreux articles sont parus sur notre projet dont parmi les plus récents : celui de Jennifer Merin sur About.com, et de Peter Monaghan sur The Moving Image Archive News. Merci à eux!
