KIGALI – The much anticipated construction of 2600 housing units in Gaculiro, Gasabo district by the Social Security Fund of Rwanda has been halted pending an outcome of talks between the fund and the Ministries of Infrastructure and Finance.
According to the fund’s Director General, Henry Gaperi, the construction that had been scheduled to start by December will be delayed owing to the recent mini cabinet reshuffle.
“We have been delayed by the reshuffle. You know the Minister of Infrastructure and that of Finance are new,” he said.
During the unveiling of a draft master plan of the Gaculiro estate, Gaperi told the press that SSFR was engaging authorities in government for joint partnership in putting up infrastructure like road network, electricity and sewerage systems of the housing estate.
Gaperi didn’t divulge when they would begin talks with the concerned government departments.
The multimillion dollar housing project is expected to have 2600 units with necessary amenities within reach.
“On top of residential houses, we are going to build hospitals, nursery schools, markets, roads and other infrastructure,” he disclosed.
The 2,600 units would include 100 luxurious villas, 200 semi-luxurious and 325 semi detached units.
They would also have apartments ranging from two to four bedrooms.
The proposal was to have construction work on the 150 hectares end within a period of four years. The pension fund is one of the biggest investors in real estate in Kigali City for both residential and office premises.
